Congratulations, on surviving “Blue Monday"

25 January 2012

The third Monday of January has been awarded this gloomy name due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills.

Coupled with failed New Year resolutions and, perhaps, diets that were just too hard to stick to, makes for a pretty depressing day.  However, help is at hand.  There is a wealth of volunteering opportunities just waiting for you.

Opportunities that can lift your spirits, help you learn new skills, give you the chance to share your skills and expertise with others, meet new people and even have fun!  So what are you waiting for?

Here are just a few ideas for you to mull over while you snuggle up by the fire.

Chiltern Cats Protection is looking for Cat Fostering volunteers to provide daily hands-on cat care in their own homes, either in a provided purpose-built cat cabin in your garden or in an adapted spare room.  This is a key role to ensure the needs of each cat are met appropriately and that time is spent grooming and socialising.  Time involved would usually be 1-3 hours per day together with some record keeping for each cat.  Full on-going training, support and a manual will be provided.

Florence Nightingale Hospice needs Day Hospice Drivers to join their friendly and valued team of volunteers.  Drivers will bring patients into the Day Hospice and then take them home later.  Commitment is one day a week, a fortnight or a month.  Volunteers must hold a current driving licence, enjoy meeting people and be able to work as part of a team.  They must be reliable and punctual.  A Criminal Records Bureau check will be arranged by the Hospice for each volunteer.

The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust is seeking Activities Volunteers primarily to befriend individuals and help with visits into the community.  Help is also needed to support clients with gardening, playing chess, baking, pottery and other crafts.  The Trust provides residential support and rehabilitation to men and women aged between 18-65 years who have suffered an acquired brain injury.  Commitment is part time to suit the volunteer and can be both weekdays and weekends.  A Criminal Records Bureau check will be arranged by the Trust.  Volunteers should possess patience and commonsense and be at least 18 years of age.

Youth Concern are looking for an Allotments Volunteer who is interested in horticulture and can manage the allotment on their own and with the young people who use the drop-in centre.  The volunteer can use their knowledge of gardening, together with their patience and listening skills to help develop the young peoples' self-esteem and gardening skills.  Commitment is 4 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months.  A friendly, non-judgemental attitude is essential.  Experience of working with young people is desirable.  A Criminal Records Bureau check will be arranged on your behalf.  In return, they can offer an opportunity to work in a small friendly team, enhance your CV and have great job satisfaction.

Why not volunteer and banish those winter blues?
