Expert Volunteers

Expert Volunteers is an initiative to use the skills of professionals, managers and other individuals who would like to put their expert knowledge to use in the volunteer sector.

These expert volunteers will use their experience and expertise in short assignments or longer term specific roles within organisations. The assignments will bring much needed strategic and professional skills to not-for-profit groups across the county at a time when many are facing challenges related to the economic downturn.
Volunteers will be offered scoped challenging roles which will really make a difference to communities. They in turn may boost their confidence and enhance their skills and CV.

Such roles will help experts to:

  • Enhance their profile and CV to assist them into future employment
  • Appreciate how their knowledge and skills can be of value to this aspect of the local economy
  • Offers alternative areas of work for people looking to return to work sometime in the future
  • Provides a way for retired people looking to use their years of experience without having to commit to long term projects or to one organisation
  • Identify transferable skills
  • Boost morale and make new contacts
  • Provide an induction into volunteering and the not-for-profit sector

                    IEV Paul Miller

Paul Miller has used his expert skills in the voluntary sector having been made redundant after a career in business management.  For three months he worked at School Aid, which sends educational items no longer needed in the UK to schools in Africa.

Paul said: ‘Volunteering with the panel is giving me the opportunity to refresh my business analysis skills and use them in a new sector, and I have received valuable interim management training.  Working with School Aid has rekindled mydesire to return to the workplace, and I hope will provide a portfolio to demonstrate to a prospective employer that I have recent experience - often a problem for older or long term unemployed people.'

Please read further case studies illustrating work contributed by our expert volunteers and see what they have gained by volunteering and the benefits they have brought to the organisations they helped.
